Ten of Jesus' 12 disciples were martyred as He was, and many more were also killed as the Early Church began and grew. Many of these killings were by the Romans, who ruled over Israel for hundreds of years beginning in about 63 B.C. Many Christians were viciously killed in Rome itself by at the direction of Rome's emperors, such as Nero, whether it was simply because of the believers' faith, blame misplaced on them, or for the Romans' entertainment in the Coliseum. Martyrdom is a dark theme throughout the history of humanity from the Fall to the end-times, although in the game of Redemption, martyrs are Christians who were killed after Jesus' death.

Deck strategy and tips:

  • The martyrs offense typically works the best when you have a certain amount in your discard pile. But if you need a hero due to an attritioned offense then Eternal Covenant can recur them. The heroes are typically low numbered, which will give you initiative to play one or more of your several battle winners.
  • The defense is composed of Roman Emperors, several of whom are strength-heavy and toughness-weak, which will typically give your opponent initiative. This is why your defense has several interrupt/negate Enhancements. Also, be sure to play Rome ASAP so your emperors can have first strike to capitalize on your emperors’ strength. Additionally, Rome will allow you to play evil Enhancements of a different brigade (except orange), such as Third Bowl of Wrath. Furthermore, the defense works to discard cards from your opponent’s hand, so be sure to maximize this strategy.
  • Utilize GoYS with your martyrs to keep your opponent’s lost souls in play.
  • Use Polycarp to instead your opponent’s interrupt/negate, and use Eternal Covenant to recur him.
  • Golden Altar helps protect your martyrs during battle.
  • Converted Saul (Paul) makes all of your good Enhancements CBN, so be sure to convert him as soon as possible with cards like Blinding Light or Outpouring.
  • Since Paul tends to give up initiative due to his large numbers, so use Potter and the Clay to decrease him so you can gain initiative to play your CBN battle-winners. You can also use it in battle to increase or decrease an evil character.
  • Although John is in the deck he is not considered a martyr in Redemption, so keep this in mind when it comes to card abilities that target or specify a martyr.
  • Emp. Caligula has a powerful ability; however, it is conditional upon having only Romans as your defense. Therefore, keep this in mind when it comes to having Saul in play. Consider keeping Saul in your hand until you’re ready to convert him.
  • Emp. Nero is a strong blocker but be careful as he will discard your own Roman Prison site. However, you can recur it with Far Country Lost Soul.
  • Use the Site Remover soul in conjunction with the Site Discard Soul so your opponent will have to discard another card from hand.
  • Reserve accessing cards: “Gain” Lost Soul, Fifth Seal / Justice Seekers, Justin Martyr, Polycarp, Angel from the Sun, Outpouring, Potter and the Clay.
